Start by protecting what cannot leave. Separate documents, valuables, medication, keys, keepsakes, and undecided items before you build the removal scope.

Make a separate review area

Set aside paint, solvents, gasoline, pesticides, propane tanks, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, fluorescent bulbs, mercury devices, and anything unlabeled or leaking. Keep containers upright and closed.

Do not mix unknown materials

Do not pour liquids together, open sealed containers, burn materials, or place chemicals in ordinary bags. Mixing products can create dangerous reactions and makes proper disposal harder.

Use the responsible local program

Erie County publishes household hazardous-waste collection events and a drop-off voucher program for qualifying household material. Check current eligibility, appointment rules, and accepted items directly with the county.

Describe the remaining debris

Once restricted material is separated, photograph the ordinary debris and describe wood, bagged household waste, fixtures, yard material, and any sharp or heavy pieces.
